Sorry for the delay in recaps, folks! Life has gotten terribly busy for me lately, and as a result I haven't even had time to watch the last two eps! Thanks for your understanding, and feel free to say hello in the meantime!

107: Ho'apono

Are you ready for another round of Really Scowlin' Stevie? Good! 'Cause we're getting a triple dosage of that medicine in this SEAL-centric episode. Buckle your seatbelt and let's get rolling! Danno, try to roll safely, 'kay? Just 'cause you're off the cane now doesn't mean you can stop taking it easy.

Man, I miss that cane.

Finally catching up on these recaps! Before we start, you might've heard that the original Danno has died. News has it that he had been slated for a guest appearance on the Hawaii Five-O series remake, which would have been fun to see.

Now, on to our weekly dose of Hawaii!

I'm back! Now to play catch-up with episode 5. Before we get started, here's a link that Marilyn shared with me, featuring a quick and handy "then and now" guide to Hawaii Five-O. Now you can see what I mean about really wanting to do something with Jack Lord's hair. Thanks, Marilyn!

Now, onwards with ep 5!

Hello!

Just a little note to say that I won't be able to do a recap of tonight's Hawaii Five-O, as I'll be busy packing and then whisking away to somewhere with plenty of sunshine! Rest assured I will have the latest episode waiting for me on my return, and I will post the play-by-play on my return. Thanks!

Another week, another fresh episode of Hawaii Five-O. And this time, we get to meet Stevie's sister! Toldja it'd be a handy plot-point. Show doesn't open with that, though. Nope, we get a dollop of some friendly prison riot action. Well, okay, it's not so much a "riot" as it is a very civilized clutching-of-the-bars and yelling while the main bad guy makes his escape. Between you and me, I think the rest of the prisoners're a bit mad to be left out of the party.

103: Malama Ka Aina

A brief moment, if I may, while I share a CBS promo image of Hawaii Five-O:

Hopefully they were rewarded with some nice toasty marshmallows for this shoot.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one certainly needs no explanation as to how it represents the show's appeal so well. It manages to both make the viewer giggle madly and then make them say, "Hey, let's have another serving of that!"

Onwards to episode 3! Word is that this ep was actually supposed to be ep #2, but that CBS decided to switch it with "Ohana," the original ep #3. I think that was a smart move; you want to be able to retain your viewers once you've reined them in, and both the pilot and "Ohana" had the same energy of high fun and action. This ep, on the other hand, had a more serious note, and I think it might've thrown new viewers off if it had ended up as the second ep instead.

102: Ohana

Ohana means "family," right? Amazing what you learn from Lilo & Stitch. Anyway, onwards to episode 2! The opening montage features surfing, bikinis, hula dancers, palm trees. . . just in case you forgot where all this is taking place. Between you and me, I think the title might've given it away.

101: Pilot

Note: Dialogue in "quotes" are real. Anything else is made-up.

Okay, a couple of weeks before the Hawaii Five-O (2010) pilot aired, I'd watched the original Hawaii Five-O (1968) pilot, so interspersed along this play-by-play will be a bunch of comparisons between the old pilot and the new pilot. The obvious main difference is that the original pilot was movie-length, so it could take its time. It could build up a sinister feel (especially if you watched it late at night, like I did). It could detour into making random commentaries about hippies (more on that later). It could make you really wish you could do something with Jack Lord's hair. That's all well and good, but really, I think the remake version's pilot sets the tone pretty well for the rest of the season: we're going to have us some good old -fashioned fun, kids!
